Polyvagal Theory

Polyvagal Theory

Polyvagal Theory was developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, and explains how the nervous system, specifically the autonomic branch of the nervous system influences not only physiological states in the body but also our perception, behavior, and social connections.  As stated by the Polyvagal Institute, the core principles of Polyvagal Theory "explain how the nervous system organizes physiological state, how it evaluates safety and threat, and how regulation is maintained and restored through relationships."  (https://www.polyvagalinstitute.org/whatispolyvagaltheory)

In therapy, we can utilize principles of Polyvagal Theory to help become more aware of body signals, understand triggers, and learn techniques to help regulate the nervous system and restore a sense of safety.
